Illusions can be shattered …
June 11, 2010 No CommentsFor years and years (until Deadwood, anyway) Calamity Jane was Doris Day. She was a little rough around the edges and a little fashion impaired, but she could shoot and she sure could sing good.
One 30 minute visit to Deadwood, SD took that little illusion, threw it down in the dirt and stepped on it. According to the “real account” of Calam, she was a good shot, she did dress in leathers .. but she was also a drunk and a .. well, we’ll just say “easy for money” or that she liked her some Hickok, she lied a bit about things, and there’s good chance her whole relationship with Hickok was a product of her imagination.
In short, she weren’t no Doris Day. But she did lead her own life – the way she wanted to lead it. She was a scout for the US Army, she was a nurse during Deadwood’s small pox epidemic, she was known to be kind … that counts for something.
