Never Sit With Your Back to the Door
June 10, 2010 No CommentsWild Bill Hickok lived by that adage…until August 2, 1876, when sitting with his back to the door (duh!) he was shot in the back and died while playing poker in Deadwood, SD. Hickok gained fame through being a scout, a lawman, and a poker player. Often all at the same time.
His gal pal, Calamity Jane, is interred next to him at Mount Moriah Cemetery. There are debates as to whether the two were ever actually a couple or if it was more of a one way infatuation on Jane’s part. Regardless Jane was loyal to the end, with her dying request to be buried next to Hickok.
What else does Deadwood have to offer? How would we know. We had already lost enough time at Rushmore and Crazy Horse to spend too much time investigating, but we wager there must be something to be said for the berg – the entire town is on the National Historic Registry.
